Urbanism Next Blog Launch

SCI is excited to announce the launch of our Urbanism Next Blog. The blog is part of SCI's approach toward proactive and coordinated research and public discourse investigating the effects of technological advances on cities. Urbanism Next addresses how changes like autonomous vehicles, the sharing economy and different lifestyle preferences will affect livability, mobility and sustainability; particularly in how today's advances will influence the future spatial development of cities.

How will the design of the future city change and how can we guide that change proactively?

Letter from the Co-Directors

Dear Friend of SCI,

The recent election of Donald Trump has made two things clear for those of us working on sustainability issues: 1) there likely will be little leadership on environmental issues at the national level; and 2) cities will clearly be the place where innovation and leadership happens. While we are disheartened at what will likely be the national approach to sustainability, we are ever more committed to bridging the key gaps that prevent cities from moving forward sustainably, smartly, and equitably.  SCI does this work through cross-disciplinary applied research, organizing across sectors to help define future opportunities for cities, connecting brilliant students from across the country to local sustainability projects, and more.

We remain confident that organizations like SCI, in conjunction with partners in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, will be working as diligently as ever to ensure that our cities can meet our needs of today and the needs of future generations to come.  We welcome any possible support to help make this work happen as well, as most of our efforts are supported with external resources. We know you are also committed to this work – thank you for your efforts and dedication to making the world a better place.
