City of Philomath (2026-2028)
The City of Philomath is a close-knit and historically rich community located just west of Corvallis in the scenic Marys River Valley. Philomath blends a strong sense of civic pride with a deep-rooted commitment to education, community service, and stewardship of its natural surroundings.
Philomath’s origin story is unique among Oregon communities. Rather than forming around commerce or transportation, the town was built around education. In 1865, members of the United Brethren Church established Philomath College, derived from the Greek term meaning “lover of learning”, laying the foundation for a community centered on knowledge and shared purpose. The town was formally incorporated in 1882, and its identity continues to reflect this educational legacy.
“Philomath's partnership with UO's Sustainable City Year Program is just what we need. We have several important community projects which have been on our strategic plan for years, that we haven't had availability of staff resources to take on. This program allows us to expand our capacity and make some real progress. I know that Philomath will be an even better place to live as a result of the work we're doing together.”
– Christopher McMoran, Mayor of Philomath
The area’s history also includes the long-standing presence of the Kalapuya people, specifically the Chepenefa band, who lived throughout the Marys River Valley and surrounding foothills for generations. Their cultural and spiritual connection to the land, particularly to Marys Peak, remains an important part of the region’s story.
Today, Philomath continues to evolve while maintaining its strong small-town character and engaged community spirit. The completion of the Philomath Downtown Streetscape Project revitalized the downtown core through enhanced sidewalks, pedestrian amenities, landscaping, lighting, gathering spaces, and accessibility improvements that created a more welcoming and vibrant community center. The project helped strengthen connections between local businesses, residents, and visitors while reinforcing downtown as the heart of the community.
Philomath has also emerged as a unique regional hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, home to a diverse mix of advanced manufacturing, technology, engineering, wood products, design, and creative industries that are uncommon in many communities of similar size. This blend of historic character, forward-thinking businesses, volunteerism, and civic partnership continues to shape Philomath as a resilient and dynamic community focused on sustainable growth and quality of life.
Through the Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP), Philomath is partnering with the University of Oregon to advance priority projects that support sustainable growth, community resilience, and quality of life. This partnership builds on the city’s tradition of collaboration and forward-thinking leadership, leveraging student and faculty expertise to address local challenges and opportunities.

This SCYP and City of Philomath partnership is possible in part due to support from U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, as well as former Congressman Peter DeFazio, who secured federal funding for SCYP through Congressionally Directed Spending. With additional funding from the city, the partnership will allow UO students and faculty to study and make recommendations on city-identified projects and issues.
